CASSINI Hackathon comes to Gabrovo: EU Space for Peace and Resilience

20 October 2026

The Technology Transfer Office Risk Space Transfer (RST-TTO), a member of the FIERCE ecosystem, is organising the Bulgarian edition of the 12th CASSINI Hackathon together with the Centre for National Security and Defence Research (CNSDR) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Technical University of Gabrovo.

The event will take place in person from 27 to 29 November 2026 at the Technical University of Gabrovo. Under the theme “EU Space for Peace and Resilience“, participants will explore how data and services from the European space programmes Copernicus and Galileo can be applied to security challenges.

Teams will work on one of three challenges:

  1. Cybersecurity for space-based strategic enablers

  2. Space-enabled crisis response and civil resilience

  3. Countering transnational crime and terrorism with space data

The hackathon is open to anyone over 18, including students, cadets, software developers, security experts and young professionals. No prior experience with space data is required, as training and tools are provided. Participants can join individually or as a team, and registration is free of charge.

The top three teams in Bulgaria will receive cash prizes, as well prizes from local partners and sponsors. The local winners will also qualify for the European competition, which offers a total cash prize pool of €9,000. The three best teams across all participating countries will be awarded six months of expert mentoring by CASSINI.

Through initiatives such as the CASSINI Hackathon, RST-TTO helps build skills, networks and new opportunities for Bulgarian innovators to engage with the space sector.
