Introduction of UIV Urban Innovation Vienna and the Vienna Geospace Hub

UIV Urban Innovation Vienna (UIV) is the climate and innovation agency of the City of Vienna, dedicated to promoting and supporting sustainable transformation processes with focus on mobility, urban development, energy, climate, and digitalisation. UIV operates at the interface of policy, administration, research, industry, business, and civil society to co‑create solutions that support Vienna’s long‑term goals, including achieving climate neutrality by 2040.

Within this broader strategic framework, UIV operates the Vienna Geospace Hub, an innovation laboratory established in 2023 to drive the use of geospatial and Earth observation data to address urban challenges. The Vienna Geospace Hub provides an experimental environment where users of satellite and geospatial data from both the public and private sectors can connect with solution providers to develop, pilot, demonstrate, and scale innovative data-driven applications aimed at supporting climate adaptation and sustainable urban development.

The hub is funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), the Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (BMIMI) and the City of Vienna. Its activities are aligned with the Austrian Space Strategy 2030+, which focuses on sustainable space development, scientific excellence, talent promotion, and increasing the space sector’s societal relevance. The involvement in the ESA Green Transition Information Factory (GTIF-AT) further strengthens its role in promoting the use of Earth observation data for green transition and sustainable development. Through its activities, UIV and the Vienna Geospace Hub contribute to positioning Vienna as a leading city in leveraging space‑derived data for climate resilience and sustainable innovation, providing networking, knowledge exchange, and experimentation opportunities for a broad spectrum of stakeholders.
